Instructions and Help about Fema debris removal guidelines 2020-2024

Music, good morning. This is Rhonda Yang, the Sustainability Director for Monroe County. Today, we are here to celebrate the groundbreaking of our first canal cleanup in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. This devastating hurricane impacted over 500 canals in the Florida Keys, and one of the most affected areas is here on Big Pine Key. The avenues on Big Pine Key were among the canals that suffered significant damage, causing immense challenges for the entire county. Fortunately, the State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has recognized the urgency of this situation and granted six million dollars to unincorporated Monroe County. This generous contribution will greatly assist us in the cleanup project. Estimates show that it will take approximately four to six months to complete the cleanup of these canals. However, we acknowledge that additional funds will be necessary to fully restore all the affected canals. The extent of the damage is substantial, and we have a long way to go, but we are thrilled to finally launch this much-needed project. The canal cleanup is essential not only for the environment but also for the well-being of the entire community. By restoring these canals, we can ensure the safety and functionality of our waterways, benefiting both residents and wildlife alike. We are committed to seeing this project through to the end, and we are grateful for the support we have received thus far. As we begin this important endeavor, we would like to express our gratitude to all those involved, including the State DEP office, as well as the residents and volunteers who will be working tirelessly to clean up the canals. It is through collaborative efforts like these that we can overcome the challenges brought by natural disasters and restore our beloved communities. Together, we will make a difference. Music.
